Station Masters Duties & Responsibilities

• Station Master need to see all signals, point gates of level crossings and the whole machinery of his station. If any defects found need to report that immediately.
• Only Station Master have a right to ask for or give line clear or give authority to proceed.
• Station Master must inspect the cabins, signals, level crossing gates, lamps, weighting machines, goods and station yard & vehicles standing there at least once a day.
• Station Master is responsible to answer if any goods, parcels & Other materials left on the platform.
• Operation of Block instrumentation must be done by the authorized person.
• Station Master must track the orders and keeping books and returns are written properly or not.

Duties of a Station Master in Indian Railway

• Signal cabins- Station Master should know that they staff employed in the signal cabins have some knowledge about their works. If any issues, they want to visit the signal cabins frequently. Station Master need to ensure the availability of equipment’s in the signal cabins.
• Report of neglect of duty – Submission of report regarding the persons who neglect their works is comes under the duties of Station Master.
• Station Master must know the station working rules.
• Control of Shunting: Shunting operations shall be controlled by fixed signals or hand signals or by verbal directions. At the time of shunting speed must be in 15 kilometres.
• Securing of vehicles at station – Station Master shall see that vehicles standing at the station are properly secured in accordance with special instructions.
• Leaving vehicles in sidings outside station limits – No railway servant shall leave any vehicle in a siding outside station limits, unless the vehicle is clear of all running lines and, except under special instructions, unless the wheels there of are properly secured.
• Shunting will be performed only by the Engine Driver on the instructions of the Station Master, Yard Master, Guard, Shunting Master or whoever may be in-charge of shunting operations.
